I need to thank the team of people involved in the Stilbaai X-Tri for making the event a success.
It took the efforts of about 20 marshals under the guidance of Nico Steenkamp, 12 students, the Eden Protocol Crew, 5-7 surfski paddlers, and other helpers to make the event happen. Seekombuis provided a fantastic selection of food to satisfy hungry athletes and spectators. Grevil & Sharon supported us with excellent race timing results, and the Hessequa Municipality offered both logistical and financial support for the event.
The river presented a challenge on race day, with a chilly temperature of 15°C. The swim became an adventure, as mist added an extra layer of difficulty in navigation. However, it also helped cool down the day, making conditions more bearable for competitors.
Covering distance in the reserve helped us navigate some routes, but it became an issue when closing off single-track sections designated for hikers only. The Flying Club once again granted us permission to cycle around the airstrip, but upon inspection, I noticed that some cyclists took shortcuts along the borders of the airstrip. Additionally, I observed a Pilatus plane circling overhead, unable to land before 13:00. Apologies for the inconvenience. Stilbaai needs more off-road cycling options to prevent such issues in the future.
More than 200 athletes participated on race day, accompanied by an even larger number of spectators. Thankfully, there were no serious accidents, for which I am very grateful. After the event, I learned that the NSRI was on standby throughout the race—their silent presence was deeply appreciated!
Keep an eye on the racing calendar for 28 March 2026—God willing, we will be racing the Stilbaai X-Tri again!
