727 ADVENTURE
We call the events we participate in adventures when they capture the thrill, excitement, and personal growth that come from exploring the unknown. If adventure is our sport, then that’s just a bonus.
I coined the name 727 Ride for a nonstop MTB event in Stilbaai. Little did I realize how my subconscious had already connected the dots. Three months later, it hit me—my phone, WhatsApp, and personal privacy. At iALA, we implemented a simple yet powerful rule: no messages after 7 PM, and complete radio silence until 7 AM—thus, 727 was born!
The Call of the Wild by Jack London tells a tale of adventure and survival in the wilderness, far removed from routine and social media. Similarly, Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer explores the extreme challenges faced by climbers on Everest, particularly during the infamous 1996 season. These stories remind us that true adventure exists beyond the screen.
Social media broadcasts our adventures, but it also consumes our time. What’s the balance? To truly stay energized for the outdoors, we must learn to manage our screen time effectively. Adventure-Based Learning (ABL) is an experiential approach that leverages sport, outdoor challenges, and teamwork to promote personal growth and development. It fosters self-exploration through unpredictable, outcome-driven activities.
Benefits of ABL:
- Teamwork and cooperation
- Problem-solving skills
- Increased confidence
- Enhanced communication skills
- Physical fitness
- Resilience and adaptability
- Connection with nature
- Leadership development
- Fun and engagement
Why This Matters
We need to deeply understand the impact of our atomic habits. As sport and adventure enthusiasts, we balance our day jobs with staying fit and healthy. I suspect our screen time—on phones and laptops—needs to be a conscious part of our time management strategy as well. Because, in the end, the real adventure is out there.
